Stop Trying to Do The Hard Thing so You Can Start Doing What’s Best.

This Medium account began in early 2021 with one goal in mind: to write a book. My goal for last year was to write a book, and I knew in order to do that, I needed to be a writer. So, it was with much enthusiasm that I wrote here every day (except weekends), until May, when I switched into class writing mode.

Since then, my attendance here has been spotty. But it hasn’t been because I’ve lost sight of my goal. It’s actually that my goal shifted somewhat. I was really getting stuck in the process of writing the book. I was particularly struggling to really find one cohesive idea to write the book about. At a certain point, I felt like the book was going to be something about The Illustration Process, and that is what I started to focus in on. However, I continued to struggle with believing that this would really make the best book. I was still struggling to find a single idea that was powerful enough to make a whole book about. That’s when I knew I had to shift gears.

Today is the second day since launch, and I’m pleased to say the class is now up to about 200 students, which is a good start. I wonder if I…
