8 Ways to Choose Colour Palettes in Your Illustration

How do you become good at choosing and using colours? How do you know which colour palettes to use for an illustration? Are some people born with good colour sense, while others are not?

It might be possible that some people have a special talent for working with colour. It is, however, definitely true that many people have no idea how to use it, especially when starting out. I say this both from an observational standpoint, and from a personal one.

The good news is that learning to work with colour, developing your colour sense and sensibility, is possible. The first thing anyone who wants to learn about using colour is to learn colour theory. Everyone can do that. But many learn the basics of colour theory and still have little confidence in choosing and using colours themselves. What’s the deal?

Colour theory is a system. It’s based on science. But good science is not guaranteed to breed good art. Science helps us categorize and systematize natural phenomenon, but it doesn’t tell us how or why to use it in our art. It’s possible to have a scientific understanding of perspective, light, anatomy, or botany, but none of these things…
