5 Struggles of Aspiring Illustrators

Challenges We All Face and How to Overcome Them

President. Actor. Model. Musician. Artist. Illustrator. What do these careers have in common? They are all dream jobs. Dream jobs are great, but for most people, they’re more dream than job. Becoming an illustrator is maybe not as hard as becoming President, but for many of us, when we’re starting out, it sure seems like it.

The good news is that with enough time and effort, most people can learn to illustrate at the professional level. That’s not to say there aren’t challenges, though. I believe that a key to blasting through hard things is understanding what makes them so hard. If you know your adversaries well enough, you will be able to defeat them.

When working toward your dream of becoming an illustrator, here are five such adversaries, or struggles, you will probably encounter. While there are certainly more than just these ones, these are ones that seem to be coming up a lot in conversations I’ve been having with my students and community.
